YOUR FIRST PAIR OF BABY SHOES

These are the tiny shoes that you used to wear.
Your first steps free from our hands, we watched as you stepped away.
During the coming years, as we guided you.
You would toddle across the lawn, and safely across the street.

You soon grew strong and steady, finding puddles to kick and splash,
Peddling a two-wheel bike, and winning a schoolyard dash.
Kicking a ball, learning to skate, racing a friend home from school.
Skipping a rope, jumping on the bed, diving feet first into the pool.

 We watched you often stumble, scraping a knee or taking a fall,
We taught you to jump back up and stand so tall.
You knew we would always be behind you. Our Love gave you wings.
To proudly fill the shoes, a grown-up life will bring.

You walked across the stage to get your diploma, when graduation
day arrived.
We watched you through misty eyes.
The years have quickly passed, and you learned how to drive.
A family of your own one day, they will start their journey with pride.

These tiny shoes we will hold to our hearts, for each tomorrow you will grow.
Today we will hold them closer, for too soon you will go.
